Write Me a Customized Workout Program… Get Me Jacked.

The price of convenience and optimization can be seen in many outcomes. I’ll use my profession as the example… Personal Training / Coaching.
Three major step have occurred in this industry: physically in-person 1:1 training or coaching; online 1:1 training or coaching; templates, google, and A.I. training or coaching.

This evolution has developed from the increase of a busy work schedule, over reliance on convenience, and probably the hardest pill to swallow… a further decline into human interaction without a screen.

Now don’t get me wrong, I believe each of these steps can be extremely useful in their own right. Yes, even the A.I.
However, the focus here is on over relying on A.I. to build programs or do your own reading. And using it to answer your every question about training or nutrition.

Humans have their faults; but the majority of people working their day-to-day in fitness are well intended. Typically having a good understanding of movement and usually having your success in-mind. And as long as they aren’t demanding you have to train or eat a certain way. They are clear that any meaningful results in this area will take some time, then you’re all good!

The issue with A.I. is that it doesn’t actually “customize” for you. It takes what you tell it (which is usually vague, because if you knew exactly what you needed you wouldn’t be asking A.I.) and spits out the average answer from the entirety of the internet. Not only this, but it’s well documented that it can also make up it’s own answers. I’m assuming this is from how much data is there, and it splices it together at times. Again, people can also be wrong and deceiving.
But most of the time, trainers and coaches want you to reach your goals almost as bad as you do. And that human connection I believe is a strong piece of the pie.

When I take on a new client, whether that’s in-person or online, I write their programming from scratch. I use a base template so my program layout look the same, or at least similar.
Why build it from scratch and not use a template?
It’s because I understand there is someone who was like me, that just wants to be the best version of themselves. Health and fitness is a great multiplier for that. If that’s for their general health, striving to be able to keep up with their kids, dominate in a chosen sport, or just age better. It keeps the momentum.

So what I’m getting at is that A.I. is free and will give you an average starting point. That’s great! And if that’s all you can afford, then use it, but with caution. It’s okay to question it… especially if any response is an absolute or too accommodating. Getting results means being uncomfortable at times and it will not always agree with your perception.

If you can afford a bit more… online coaching with someone you trust or is recommended by someone you trust, is an even better option. Not solely on the notion that you’re getting a customized program; but that there is someone to hold you accountable, answer your questions, give you real feedback, and that can over time get to know you more personally.

In-person is probably the best overall if you have the funds and/or schedule. This is because of everything I mentioned prior about online coaching. With the added parts of real time feedback, conversation, and understanding.

In the grand scheme of it all. The best program and routine is the one that you will follow.
Find the version that will actually help you.
If you seem to have an issue getting it done on your own, hire someone. If it’s as simple for you as laying out your gym clothes every morning, do that.
Just do something, and stick with it.
