The Boring Plan Wins.
I'll save you the suspense on this one… the training and meal plan that always turns out working is typically pretty simple. It's the plan with the same handful of lifts and meals, done for a long, sometimes boring stretch of time.
But... that's not what sells. What sells is the new 12-week shred, the "muscle confusion" program, the meal plan with 40 recipes you'll never get to. The problem is novelty feels like progress. Though most of the time it's just the shiny new thing, making you set down the one that's been working.
Look at any high level athlete, performer, or what have you... the thing that they're really good at, came with hundreds to thousands of hours of doing the same stuff.
Same Lifts, More Intentional
So look at it this way your body adapts to the stress it endures over and over. That's the whole idea behind progressive overload (adding a little more weight, reps, or sets over time). If you swap programs every three weeks, you never stay on anything long enough to overload it. You're basically starting over every month and calling it variety. Mind you, it's okay to switch a couple things up here and there, but full overhauls every month is not what works.
Think of it like saving money. Nobody builds wealth picking a random new stock every Tuesday. The people who get somewhere put the same amount in, month after month, and let it compound. Squat, hinge, press, pull, carry. Follow it, add here and there, repeat.
And again, does that mean never change anything? No. I get you need to break up the redundancy from time to time... swap an exercise when you're feeling a certain joint acting up, or when progress seems to have completely flatlined. Just make sure they're only adjustment, not an overhaul.
Same Meals, Fewer Decisions
It’s the same idea with food. The good news is it doesn’t really matter the type of eating protocol you choose to utilize… being low-carb, low-fat, or balanced, as long as they’re in a calorie range for their desired outcome, the answer is the same:
The diet you actually stick to wins. Adherence and consistency beats the "perfect" plan just about every time.
The easiest way to stick to something is to take the decisions out of it. The people who do well eat the same two or three breakfasts, the same couple of lunches, and rotate a few dinners. You don’t have to eat the same exact thing everyday… but a rotation of some staples can do wonders.
Hit your protein (0.8 to 1 gram per pound), get some fruits and vegetables in, and don't drink your calories. It's not exciting. And it doesn't need to be. Plus, a little effort into flavor and what you make can be a game changer.
When Will It Work…?
The biggest issue is the flashy new thing and what is seen on social media.
Simple works, but it works slowly. Which is what you want. It’s about what you achieve and learn over the process.
A realistic fat loss pace is somewhere around 0.5 to 1% of your bodyweight per week until you hit the wall and the skills you’ve been learning become invaluable tools. Then you have the feat of adding muscle, which after you’re outside those early gains, becomes a lot slower of a pace…
It won’t happen overnight, or even after a couple weeks… the real progress comes after months to years of real work. That’s the beauty in it. Remind yourself, that at whatever stage you’re in, that it took you x amount of time to get to this point. Give your body and self some grace with your expectations.
That dull feeling around week six or so? This is the point where it's starting to work, so push yourself forward.
Most people decide this is quitting time and go looking for something new.
Don’t.
Remember… the plan that works is the one you can run for a long time without thinking about it. Keep it simple, keep showing up, and let the work do it’s job.
