Keep On, Keepin’ On.
I’m fairly confident in saying that the hardest part of any new skill, adventure, hobby, or fill in the blank is that push-back. And not the one that you initially have, because most people don’t really have an issue starting something. When you’re super motivated, you’ve slept really well, life is in a good spot… at least for that day or week, and heck, the sun is out, you can do anything.
No… I’m talking about that rainy day. The one where it’s easier to just lie in bed, or guard the couch. Because what’s one day? The problem for most of us, is that one day isn’t just one day.
The initial motivation is very fleeting. Almost like trying to keep a few drops of water in your hand from evaporating, during the middle of July, while walking down I-5 in Southern California. Those drops probably aren’t going to stick around very long, and you most likely couldn’t care less about putting too much effort into retaining those drops.
Well… what if someone offered you one million dollars to maintain those drops in your hand? Better yet, what if they offered you years on your life and the potential to go well into your 80s being able to play with your grandkids?
The only thing you have to do is put in a bit more effort, and endure a little more inconvenience in securing that water while you walk.
That's what your health is. Except nobody has to offer you the money… it's already on the table.
Now I know this is a strength and conditioning newsletter.
But S&C isn’t only for athletes and sports.
In the world we live in today, it is so much more.
I’m positive that if you’re reading my articles, you’re likely to be at least fairly active. However, as in my life, you probably have those you care about who do not take the time to move their body. Or they start, but never continue.
The most valuable thing you have is your health. Mentally and physically.
The best part is that the physical aspect typically bleeds benefits into the mental part.
Start today, and don’t stop. Don’t overcomplicate it. One day is better than none, and the more you do, the more reward. You just have to get past that push-back.
When life gets tough, you’re sore, or you just don’t feel like it… Do something.
This goes for working out, playing guitar, writing that book, or actually walking the dog. If something is hard to do after the initial motivation, nine times out of ten, it’s worth doing.
“To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”
