The Narrative May Not Revolve Around You;
But You Can Be The Hero In Your Own Story.

When I mention hero, typically the first images that pop into your head will be of iconic comic or big screen action superhero. For some of you it’s your favorite character from the Avengers, or Justice League; maybe it’s someone from an anime you watch; or others it’s the classic knight in shining armor.
All of these are great… In each of them we get to experience the hero’s journey. The feat that made them who they are in our heads. The deeds, adversity, and triumphs that built them into the icons they are.

But superheros don’t exist.
At least not in the way they are portrayed on the page or in the t.v. Yet we admire them, watch them, and even wear their marks.

We admire them for their strength, unwillingness to surrender, and selflessness in the face of an easier selfish path.
I believe it’s within us to aspire to be like them. And not only to posses those traits, but to embark on our own hero’s journey.

So Why Don’t You?

Why don’t you embark on your own hero’s journey?
I’m not talking about fighting bad guys, swinging from building to building, or having a terrible sleep schedule.
Right now, stop and think about it: what does your hero’s journey look like?

Honestly, you’re probably already living it.
The comic book, movie, or t.v. show doesn’t show you the real struggle. Which is the consistent work that needs to be put in. The boring parts and stuff that doesn’t seem like a whole lot, but has to get done anyway.
Real heroes just like Rome, were not built in a day…week… or even a year. It takes time to become great.

The hero comes in all types. It’s the couple just starting a family and doing what they can to raise a healthy and good person; to the people who stop and ask if someone is okay on the side of the road; and even the person that picks up the garbage on the floor when nobody is around.

You don’t have to be extraordinary to be a hero.

You have to be willing to understand that you’re not the only person that matters.
I personally am a bit over critical of others actions and still catch myself being selfish at times. But this shouldn’t mean that I have the right to belittle, believe I am above anyone, or cannot help another. I am currently on my hero’s journey… and it ain’t easy.

So if I’ve learned anything so far in life it’s to slow down and evaluate what’s important.
Speeding to work, is not more important than your life or others. Taking a moment to smile or hold a door open will not ruin your day. And possibly instead of raging out on the internet, go read a book, take a walk, or go volunteer.

Be the hero of your story.
Be a good person, even when the camera is off.

If you’ve made it this far. Thank you for continuing to read my articles. I know this new style to the weekly mix is a bit different, but I do see the value in these philosophy dives. To me they are just as important to health, fitness, and sport as is the physical. Because without a powerful mind and thought, we are nothing more than empty animations.
