What’s In Your Control?
I am ninety nine percentage sure that you’ve stressed over something so much that you couldn’t sleep, eat, or think of anything else. And before you just assume, yes I’ve had to give a speech before too…
Or remember when you were younger, and you’d wake up in the middle of the night needing to use the restroom; but it was pitch black and no way you were getting out of bed with that monster hanging out, just waiting until you place even one toe on the ground. Just me? Cool.
I’ll give you one more example that is most likely a bit more currently relatable. Picture this: you’re late for work; it’s peak rush hour; both lanes are full and they’re all going the speed limit… right on the dot.
I am now one hundred percent sure that the last example has happened to you.
Hopefully I don’t lose you here, but… becoming stressed out, frustrated, and/or angry will not fix the position you’re in. Here’s the logical reason why:
Time = Distance ÷ Speed.
At low speeds, increasing speed saves a lot of time.
At high speeds, increasing speed saves very little time.
Example (60 miles):
30 → 60 mph = save 1 hour
60 → 90 mph = save 20 minutes
90 → 120 mph = save ~10 minutes
The faster you already are, the less time you can “make up.”
Time savings shrink, but risk keeps increasing.

I’m not trying to tell you that you wont save time, but at some point it really doesn’t matter anymore.
Due to trying to make a singular point here, I’ll refrain from the other traits that typically come into play: entitled, impatient, self-centered, instant gratification, etc…
And this is the philosophical reason why:
To quote an ancient philosopher named Seneca “we suffer more often in imagination, than in reality.”
Now you may read that I and think I’m trying to tell you that the traffic and being late are all in your head… and you’d be sort of right.
Due to the factors of tardiness and the potential of that getting worse from the traffic are in all reason causing you the stress and anxiety. However, it’s in the fact that you are worrying about the portions of your situation that are out of your control. These are causing you to build and build to possible anger or frustration. Making yourself suffer.
Once you’re in this position: a) you can only go as quick as the traffic will allow; and b) you are already late.
Those two points are now out of your control. Whether you like it or not.

So now what?
Focus on what is in your control. It’s only in your head that swerving, honking, or yelling at your steering wheel is going to fix anything. You’re building up these imaginary issues. If you’re late to work, is that the end of your life? Is your or other life worth getting angry or frustrated over? Speeding will possibly save you time; but then there is the chance of being pulled over, or worse… a car wreck. Then you’re definitely going to be late.
Okay, so I sort of went a bit dark with the whole late to work thing. So let’s briefly go back to my other examples I gave.
And trust me… I know it’s easier said than done at times. But, when you have something major coming up and it’s bothering you in some way; focus solely on the areas that are in your control. There is no reason to create monsters in your dark room. As long as you apply your energy and focus into what you can do… which in most things is typically prepare by studying or practicing; and then don’t forget to take care of yourself as well. Sleep, exercise, and eat well.
If you didn’t catch last weeks first entry of this type of article… I know it’s a bit off the normal path of strength, conditioning, and nutrition. Though, I believe mindset and thought can be just as important as the physical stuff.
So going forward I’m sticking to adding this type of article to the now 3 weekly drops.

I’ve started a second YouTube channel where I’m currently breaking down the books in Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Just my insight, thoughts, and understandings from the readings. It’s nothing fancy, but I’m enjoying it. I’ll put the link below if you’d like to check it out.
